'Two Heads Are Better Than One' Photography Workshops

About the Workshops

David Tarn and I have run a successful programme of workshops for a number of years. These workshops enable participants to spend time learning from two professional photographers with contrasting approaches and styles. David works primarily with 5”x4” large format & digital cameras and I work with digital SLRs and medium format (including pinhole) cameras.

The emphasis is on ‘hands on’ tuition with as much help and guidance given to individuals as possible. For this reason there will be a maximum of 12 people per workshop. Keeping to the ratio of 6 participants to one workshop leader enables us to be responsive to individual needs and address issues of specific concern to them – this could include anything from getting the best out of their equipment, dealing with exposure and lighting, taking images that will sell, creating photographs with a creative difference etc. In this way we are able to work with people with a wide range of knowledge and expertise – from beginners to those with several years experience. All that is required is that participants have a camera (digital or film).

The workshops are very practically focused with the maximum time spent out ‘in the field’ in some of the UK’s best locations. We both believe that the best way to learn about photography is to use a camera.

In addition to the practical sessions there will be opportunities to discuss your photographic interests as well as receive guidance & advice on landscape photography & freelancing. As part of the 3 days we also run a Portfolio Review session for participants so they can get comments & feedback on their work.

In the remainder of 2008 we are offering the following 1-3 day modular workshops: -

Workshops in the Yorkshire Dales are not new to us – it’s without doubt the part of the country we photograph the most (not surprising given that it’s on our doorsteps!). What is new though is a special themed workshop – we will be using the lovely Swaledale as our base for a concentration on ‘Creative Landscape Photography’ (12th to the 14th June). It will be an opportunity to learn about and experiment with a range of techniques to produce landscape images with a difference. NOW FULLY BOOKED.

Pitlochry in Scotland (6th – 8th November). A good time to visit this photogenic part of Scotland to capture the autumn colours as well as some of the classic views in this part of the world e.g. Queens View of Loch Tummel, the open landscapes of Loch Rannoch, picturesque Loch Tay and the wonderful Glen Lyon.

Costs for these workshops are £95 for one day, £180 for two days and £255 for three days* (NB Accommodation not included).

We’ve also planned our programme for 2009 and this will include the following: -

Northumberland (19th - 21st February)

The Yorkshire Coast (19th - 21st March)

Suffolk (23rd - 25th April)

This will be our specially priced 'recce' workshop for 2009 - see below for prices. The 'recce' workshops give participants the opportunity to discover alongside us an area that is new & relatively unknown to us. This is our third year of these 'recce' workshops and both the 2007 offering in Norfolk and the 2008 workshop in Dorset proved very popular.

Pembrokeshire Coast (14th - 16th May)

Snowdonia (17th - 19th September)

The Lake District (5th - 7th November)

Please contact me if you would like further information about any of our chosen locations.

Costs for the 2009 workshops are £105 for one day, £200 for two days and £280 for three days* (NB Accommodation not included). The Suffolk 'recce' workshop is priced at £60 for one day, £115 for two days and £160 for three days.

Please note that in order to keep costs down for participants and to allow choice & flexibility our prices do not normally include accommodation, food or transport. Participants will be responsible for these items and any associated costs (although we will be happy to make recommendations about accommodation in the area on request).

* We are pleased to be able to offer a special discount of nearly 50% for group bookings (e.g. Photographic Clubs). Bespoke workshops for groups (with programme, location and date agreed with you) are also available. Please contact me for more information.
