Workshops » Two Heads Are Better Than One

David Tarn and I have run a successful programme of workshops for a number of years. These workshops enable participants to spend time learning from two professional photographers with contrasting approaches and styles. David has extensive experience of working with 5”x4” and medium format film cameras but now uses digital SLRs for most of his work; I have used digital SLRs for several years as well as medium format cameras (with a Phase One digital back). I particularly enjoy experimenting with a range of alternative 'optics' e.g pinhole, zone plate & toy cameras and a Lensbaby.

In our workshops the emphasis is on ‘hands on’ tuition with as much help and guidance given to individuals as possible. For this reason there will be a maximum of 12 people per workshop. Keeping to the ratio of 6 participants to one workshop leader enables us to be responsive to individual needs and address issues of specific concern to them – this could include anything from getting the best out of their equipment, dealing with exposure and lighting, taking images that will sell, creating photographs with a creative difference etc. In this way we are able to work with people with a wide range of knowledge and expertise – from beginners to those with several years experience. All that is required is that participants have a camera (digital or film).

The workshops are very practically focused with the maximum time spent out ‘in the field’ in some of the UK’s best locations. We both believe that the best way to learn about photography is to use a camera.

In addition to the practical sessions there will be opportunities to discuss your photographic interests as well as receive guidance & advice on landscape photography & freelancing. As part of the 3 days we also run a Portfolio Review session for participants so they can get comments & feedback on their work.

In 2008 Lisa Clatworthy from Photography Monthly magazine spent sometime with David Tarn & I and our  workshop participants in Swaledale. A short write up of her experience can be found here.
